It had the blazing skyfire which turned much of the Earth into an inferno. Voyage had more going for it than just the Vernian feel though. Irwin Allen also directed, produced, and co-wrote the screen adaptation of Verne’s Five Weeks in a Balloon which was released the year after Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. A few years prior, Lorre had played Conseil in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the assistant of Professor Arronax who is a scientist not unlike Admiral Nelson. In Disney’s submarine movie, the crew and captain of the Nautilus have to fight a giant squid, the captain making a narrow escape from death in Allen’s submarine movie, divers from the Seaview encounter and fight with a giant squid when it attacks the captain.Īllen even cast Peter Lorre for the part of Lucius Emery, a scientist and close friend of Admiral Nelson. I really feel that Allen was very much inspired by Disney’s epic retelling of Verne’s underwater tale, and that inspiration can be seen rather clearly in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The movie also prompted a TV show with the same title based on the main characters. Alex Turner's specially composed songs for the film's soundtrack also comfortably marry with Submarine's indy credentials. Submarine has a lot to say about life, covering every subject from love to divorce and depression, but always discussing these subjects in a profound and comic way. Every character in the film is interesting, and every actor's performance memorable, from the tragic figure of Oliver's seemingly boring dad (Noah Taylor), to his prim mother looking for more excitement in her life (Sally Hawkins) to Oliver's emotionally introverted love interest Jordana (Yasmin Paige) and humongous tool of a life guru Graham (Paddy Considine). ![]() His self-aware and often comically profound voiceover recalls Audrey Tautou in Amelie.
